Enhancing the Use of Appropriate Fertilizers for Improving Rice and Maize Production in Tanzania

Most soils under maize and rice production in Tanzania are characterized by low soil fertility. Fertilizer recommendations were developed in Tanzania to improve soil productivity but most of them are for N and P nutrients. The recommendations do not cover secondary and micro nutrients because the data for these nutrients are very few to establish response functions. In year 2017 to 2019, trials were conducted in 769 farmers’ field in Tanzania to determine soil fertility status and the response... C.J. Senkoro

3. Assessment of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Content (NP) in Citrus Trees Using UAV-imagery Derived Vegetation Indices and Machine Learning Algorithms

Monitoring nutrient status of citrus trees is fundamental to ensure optimum fruit yield and quality. However, this task is traditionally time-consuming and laborious. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), with their high temporal and spatial resolution imagery, are demonstrating a great potential to substitute traditional methods in assessing nutrient status of several crops, including citrus. In this study, we evaluated the performance of vegetation indices (VIs) derived from UAV multispectral images... Z. Abail, H. Benaouda, M. Chikhaoui, H. Benyahia, O. Iben halima, M. Baraka, A. 4. The Global Crop Nutrient Removal Database (Gcnrd): Development, Initial Analysis and Identification of Current Data Gaps

Improved understanding of the factors affecting nutrient uptake can enable production optimization, increased nutrient use efficiencies, reduced environmental footprints, and overall higher economic returns for farmers. Crop uptake is affected by genetics, soil, weather, agronomic practices, and their interactions. As such, understanding the way crop nutrient uptake varies across different regions and production environments requires the coverage of various parameters, and necessitates collaboration... C. 5. Precision Farming and Automation in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities

Digitalization, artificial intelligence, robotics and automation are currently driving a new revolution towards precision farming (PF) and Agriculture 4.0. This will contribute to enhanced sustainability and agroecological advances through optimal use of soil, water, agricultural inputs, as well as pest and weed control, providing accurate decision support systems to farmers. PF is gradually transforming agricultural landscape by supporting farmers with optimized management of inputs and resources... R. Serraj
