1. Digital platforms for boosting farmer knowledge: Two case studies in Kenya and Uganda

Approximately 80% of all farms in Africa, or 33 million farms, are two hectares or less in size. Many of these smallholder farmers do not have access to resources, including extension services, to improve their farms. Lack of knowledge of Good Agronomic Practices (GAPs) causes farmers to fail to reach their full yield potential. Extension workers responsible to provide these GAPs to farmers are spread thin. For example, as of March of 2019, there was one extension worker for every 1,800 coffee... E. Bakirdjian, T. Harigaya, M. Osia, J. Zhu, J. Abuli

2. Spatial Interpolation for Mapping Hydraulic Soil Properties in GIS Environment

Soil water information is an essential input for environmental, hydrological or land surface models. There is a need for reliable soil water information with current coverage in the area. A number of 60 soil profiles data were evaluated for the performance of estimates inverse distance weighting to map some of the soil quality properties. soil profiles were used for the application of geostatistics. Maps with the investigated coverage were produced with the soil information available about soil... M.A. Abdelrahman, A.M. Saleh, M.M. El sharkawy, E. Farg, S.M. Arafat

3. Feasibility studies on developing farmer friendly rapid in-situ evaluation technique for soil quality in cocoa planation based on pocket-sized near-infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics

Rapid and in-situ determination of soil quality holds a brighter potential for improving food security, food quality and minimizing waste of excessive application of soil amendments with its effect of pollution. In this study a pocket-sized NIR spectroscopy (740 -1070 nm) and chemometrics coupled with mobile phone was used to predict nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), pH and calcium (Ca2+) in cocoa plantation soils in Ghana. Different partial least square algorithms (Full...

4. A Time Series Investigation to Assess Climate Change and Anthropogenic Impacts on the Degradation of Nile Delta, Egypt.

Land degradation risk, status and rate in Nile Delta, Egypt were assessed for a time series using remote sensing data over the past five decades using TM, ETM and OLI. Quantitative deterioration of the area was produced based on the comparative study approach in the integrated weighted sum, weighted overlay and fuzzy model. Where degradation factors were compiled in a raster and each data set scored on a 1 to 5 (very low, low, moderate, high and very high scale). The data sets were then weighted... B. Abdellatif, M.R. 5. A Suitability Approach for Land Assessment of New Reclamation Areas Using Geomatics

The study aims to develop a system to assess land suitability for agriculture use in the Arid Western Fringes of the Nile Delta. This is based on the fact that the selection of optimal sites for agricultural use is a prerequisite for productive operation and economic feasibility. This is especially true in arid regions due to the scarcity of such suitable land. New approach was implemented to use environmental and terrestrial factors; i.e., criteria of soil characteristics, climate and salinity... A.M. saleh, S.M. Arafat, M.A. Abdelrahman

6. Optimizing Water Use Efficiency in Flood Irrigation Systems in Uganda

There is growing demand for water across different sectors of production. Yet the extent of water wastage to furnish inefficient irrigation systems especially in flood irrigated rice systems, is not known. In developing countries and in Uganda particularly, most irrigation scheduling in the irrigation schemes is based on rotational system rather than crop water needs. In Doho Rice Irrigation Scheme (DRIS) in eastern Uganda for example, farmers’ plots receive up to 50mm ponding of irrigation... P. Onen, E. Opolot, G. Olupot, G. Aguttu
