1. Digital platforms for boosting farmer knowledge: Two case studies in Kenya and Uganda

Approximately 80% of all farms in Africa, or 33 million farms, are two hectares or less in size. Many of these smallholder farmers do not have access to resources, including extension services, to improve their farms. Lack of knowledge of Good Agronomic Practices (GAPs) causes farmers to fail to reach their full yield potential. Extension workers responsible to provide these GAPs to farmers are spread thin. For example, as of March of 2019, there was one extension worker for every 1,800 coffee... E. Bakirdjian, T. Harigaya, M. Osia, J. Zhu, J. Abuli

2. Feasibility studies on developing farmer friendly rapid in-situ evaluation technique for soil quality in cocoa planation based on pocket-sized near-infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics

Rapid and in-situ determination of soil quality holds a brighter potential for improving food security, food quality and minimizing waste of excessive application of soil amendments with its effect of pollution. In this study a pocket-sized NIR spectroscopy (740 -1070 nm) and chemometrics coupled with mobile phone was used to predict nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), pH and calcium (Ca2+) in cocoa plantation soils in Ghana. Different partial least square algorithms (Full...

4. Irrigation Water Management for Potato crop under Pivot Irrigation System using Remote sensing techniques

When water application records low efficiency, the water losses increased. Irrigation systems often ignore soil variability and water applied uniformly on the field; hence, the water losses amplified. Which means more water application, more energy demand, and more money expenses. El-Salhia region contains a big agricultural farm located at the South Eastern of Nile delta. The field NO 34 was chosen to be investigated under the pivot central sprinkler irrigation system which cultivated with...

5. Effect of Plant Population and Nitrogen Rate on Growth and Yield of Two Pre-release rice varieties in Kenya

The application of precision agriculture (PA) through the optimization of plant population and management of fertilizer nitrogen (N) can increase rice yield. Current rice (Oryza sativa) plant population and fertilizer nitrogen (N) management guidelines in  Kenya were developed from research conducted about three decades. These management guidelines might still be robust and could be applied to recently released as well as close-to- release varieties. However, the yield potential of... W. Kioko, W. Kioko, W. Kioko, W. 6. Keynote 1 - Precision Agriculture for Smallholders : Imperatives for Africa’s Agriculture

The African continent is at the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) with significant challenges around inclusivity. The concept of the 4-IR will imply the deployment of technologies at unprecedented scale at a time when sustainable production underscores the need to produce twice as much with half the resources. For Africa, Precision Agriculture (PA) as a modern technology,  represents a sustainable approach that will help farmers to manage their resources and increase productivity... Y. Akinbamijo

7. Chlorophyll Meter Based Precision Nitrogen Management in Maize Grown in Alluvial Soil in Egypt

Precision nitrogen (N) management is essential for profitable crop production and to minimize N losses to the environment that are a consequence of an excessive N supply. Chlorophyll meter-based N management can help to achieve high N use efficiency, as aquick and non-destructive spectral characteristics of leaves, which can be used to diagnose plant N deficiency and graduate N fertilization with improve N use efficiency. Field experiments were conducted during two consecutive years, 2019 and... A. Soaud, S. Abou-zeid , A. Ali, D. Hassan

8. Use of Earth Observation Imagery, Advanced Modelling Algorithms and Other Monitoring Systems to Produce Operational Agricultural Annual Crop Inventories for Morocco.

African farmers are facing the challenges of a changing climate, increased temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, more frequent extreme weather events and reductions in water availability. The digital transformation of the agricultural sector is one of the opportunities that can promote good practices of the African agricultural through  the sharing of information and tools for decision-making, thereby, boost economic growth of our African country. The shift to digital technologies is... M. Choukri, A. Laamrani , V. simonneaux , B. Gerard , S. Belaqziz, A. Chehbouni, K. Misbah, H. Mcnairn

9. Empower Farmers to Sustainably Agricultural Productivity in West Africa: FeSeRWAM, a Digital Advisor for Farmers

Many smallholder farmers in West Africa have a common challenge which is their inability to access the right information on appropriate agricultural inputs and practices to unlock existing potential, make better decisions and get more dividends on their investments. Supported by USAID, Feed the Future "Enhancing Growth through Regional Agricultural Input Systems (EnGRAIS/IFDC) and Partnership for Agricultural Research, Education and Development (PAIRED) have developed and deployed an...
