1. Excellence in Agronomy 2030: A new CGIAR-wide initiative to deliver agronomy solutions at scale

Required increases in crop production and productivity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) will not happen without the increased use of appropriate agronomic practices. While several thousand new varieties of nearly all key crops have been produced in the past decade, recent increases in yields in specific countries have only happened when such varieties received the right agro-inputs and management. That said, agronomy is often highlighted as an area that has not delivered impact at scale in SSA, or... B. Vanlauwe, T. Amede, F. Baudron, P. Chivenge, M. Devare, K. Saito, J. Kihara, V. Nangia, P. 2. SmartAfriHub for SmartAgriculture capacity buidling in Africa

Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH) are multi-actor ecosystems that support farming communities in their digital transformation by providing a broad variety of services from a one-stop shop. DIHs purpose is to  provide a social space for community of practices;  provide access to digital technologies and competencies; provide access to infrastructure and tests digital innovations (“test before invest”); provide development playground... 4. Application of precision agriculture technologies in grazing: example of goats browsing in forest rangelands of Northern Morocco

The aim of this study was to characterize patterns of grazing behavior of goats in a Mediterranean forest rangeland. We conducted a one-year study in the Chefchaouen region, Northern Morocco, during two contrasting seasons (spring and summer) using new technological tools. Eight goats were simultaneously fitted with GPS collars and sensors for 3 days during each season. A calibration study and classification tree analysis were used to predict other grazing activities of goats (eating, walking,... Y. Chebli, S. El otmani, M. Chentouf, J. Hornick, J. Cabaraux

5. DIGITAL MAPPING OF EXCHANGEABLE CATIONS IN SOILS OF SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA

Soil acidity and low exchangeable cation are the major soil fertility challenges resulting in low crop productivity in Southwest Nigeria. Digital soil mapping is an effective way to achieve precision agriculture. However, most of the research work on soil exchangeable cations as soil information was not geo-referenced, The study created geo-database and developed a digitized map of soil exchangeable cations Indicating the spatial distribution in soils of southwestern Nigeria. Secondary data... O.E. Awosiyan, I.K. Mary, F.A. Adesina

6. Lime and Phosphorus Effects on Soil Acidity and Malt Barley Phosphorus Use Efficiency in Welmera District, Central Highlands of Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, about 43% of total arable land affected by soil acidity. Furthermore, phosphorus (P) deficiency is a major constraint to increase crop yields. Efforts to ameliorate the deleterious effects of soil acidity must therefore be accompanied by measures to increase P availability in soils. Therefore, appropriate rate of lime and P fertilizer is an important strategy for improving crop growth in acidic soils. Accordingly, an experiment was undertaken to study lime and P effects on soil acidity... N.T. Geremew, B.B. Waraka, L.W. Mirkena

7. Using Precision Technologies to Monitor the Grazing Activities of Goat in a North African Woodland

In the north of Africa, browsing on natural pastures is the main source of feed for domestic goats. Livestock farming, particularly grazing goats, constitutes the prevalent agricultural activity in the mountainous areas of Morocco. Data on animal behavioral activities are essential for understanding their feeding and their interaction with the environment in order to define the optimal management intervention strategies. The recent development of precision farming technologies and the increasing... Y. Chebli, M. Chentouf, J. Cabaraux, S. El otmani

8. Virtual Agronomist - Getting Soil Information and Agronomic Advice into Farmers’ Hands

Precision agronomic advice tailored to individual farm field characteristics and farmer circumstances is currently unavailable to smallholder farmers in Africa. Virtual Agronomist aims to fill this gap by providing scalable agronomic advisory for African agribusinesses working with smallholder farmers. This is a scientifically based mobile phone app that is simple enough to be used with minimal training by field agents. It is designed to help farmers better meet their production and profit objectives... K. Shepherd

10. Monitoring Grazing Goats' Behavior Using Sensors and Satellite Remote Sensing

The recent development of new methods for remotely observing animal behavior using electronic sensors such as global positioning systems (GPS) and three-axis accelerometers to monitor and record behavior at different spatial and temporal scales presents real opportunities for better understanding and interpreting the behaviors of grazing animals. The goal of this study was to distinguish different behavioral categories of grazing goats by combining GPS collars, accelerometers, and satellite remote... Y. Chebli, S. El otmani, J. Cabaraux, M.
